Sometimes when I’m not feeling fantastic about myself, life, the world, etc, I like to look through photos to remind myself of good things. I don’t know about you, but I don’t tend to Instagram the hard days (although I’m sure there are a few crying pictures) and so scrolling back through them all reminds me of one nice thing after another.
If I go back far enough it can get complicated though. First I’ll find pictures of my dad, and then Frank and my old office. I’ll see a photo of my childhood home and if I keep going it will be my ex-wife and my cats and then on and on through moments of joy which now feel harder to stay with.
But even then I still find myself getting lost on occasion. Yeah, I know I fucking love nostalgia (even though I’m wary of it) but I think the bigger part is remembering that things are not always terrible. Because in my memory I’ve been struggling 90% of the time and generally okay about 10%.
But looking back I see one good thing after another and I can remember that depression lies, anxiety is a dick, and the world is full of people who love deeply.
So yeah. There’s a bunch of photos that make me happy and remind me of good things. And that’s a pretty sweet thing to have.
